Originally published on my blog here in August Ian Stewart has written several versions of a survey of the current state of mathematics, dating back as far as with Concepts of Modern more snappily titled From Here to Infinity, published inis the latest version of his book, The Problems of Mathematics/5.

Here is a book that had so much potential and fell just a bit flat, perhaps due to the fact that each chapter is a reworked lecture, meant to appeal to a listening audience.
